Why this matters

The hidden fee problem in Nigerian air freight

Most Nigerian freight forwarders quote a freight rate. What they don't tell you is that FAAN terminal charges, NCS examination levies, PAAR fees, SON inspection charges, demurrage, and their own agent markup can add 40–80% to the figure you saw first.

By the time your cargo clears MMIA, you've paid three different "extras" you weren't told about. Your cash flow is shot. Your supplier is chasing you. Your customer is waiting.

We built Doubleway specifically to fix this. Our estimate line-items every single charge β€” published, named, and explained β€” before you sign anything. CRFFN/2023/004567. CAC RC 9161673. You can verify us.

Nigerian Regulations

Air cargo compliance at MMIA β€” what you must know

Every requirement explained. We handle all of these on your behalf β€” with CRFFN-licensed agents physically at the airport.

PAAR β€” Air Cargo
Pre-Arrival Assessment Report

Nigeria Customs requires PAAR filing before your cargo lands at MMIA. Early filing (24–48 hrs before arrival) speeds up the assessment and reduces dwell time at the terminal.

Commercial invoice and packing list required for filing
HS code classification determines duty rate β€” we verify yours
PAAR generates the SGD (Single Goods Declaration)
Incorrect HS codes cause holds β€” our agents review before submission
NAFDAC β€” Food & Pharma
NAFDAC Air Cargo Clearance

Food, beverages, drugs, cosmetics, devices and packaged water all require NAFDAC inspection at MMIA. Pre-registration of products reduces clearance from days to hours.

NAFDAC registration number must match AWB description
First-time imports require NAFDAC pre-import notification
Drugs: import permit required before shipment departs
We coordinate NAFDAC inspection and certificate of release
SON / SONCAP β€” Electronics
SON/SONCAP Certification

Electronics, electrical goods and regulated products require SON (Standards Organisation of Nigeria) conformity assessment. SONCAP certificate must be obtained before shipment or cargo is rejected.

SONCAP certificate from origin country before goods ship
Product must appear on SONCAP product list
We advise on SONCAP requirements during quotation stage
SON lab testing arranged at MMIA if certificate is borderline
Form M β€” Air Cargo
Form M & CBN Requirements for Air

Form M is required for commercial imports above $1,000 USD. Air cargo Form M has different processing timelines to sea β€” it must be opened and approved before the airway bill is issued.

Form M must be opened with your Nigerian bank pre-shipment
Pro-forma invoice required for Form M application
CBN FX policy governs Form M validity period
We advise on current CBN Form M requirements β€” these change
FAAN β€” Terminal Charges
FAAN Cargo Terminal Charges at MMIA

Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria levies handling charges at MMIA cargo terminals (NAHCO / SAHCO). These are passed to you at cost β€” never marked up by Doubleway.

Storage starts accumulating after 48 hours β€” we prevent this
NAHCO and SAHCO rates published quarterly β€” we track these
Handling fee: based on chargeable weight at terminal rate
All FAAN charges itemised in your estimate before shipment
Prohibited Items β€” NCS Air
Items Prohibited or Restricted by Air to Nigeria

Nigeria Customs Service and IATA jointly govern what cannot be imported by air. Some items require special permits. Always declare accurately β€” incorrect declarations attract severe penalties.

Weapons, ammunition, explosive materials β€” prohibited
Narcotic drugs without NDLEA permit β€” prohibited
Lithium batteries: restricted β€” special IATA DGR packing required
Used clothing: duty applies β€” declare correctly to avoid seizure
Drones: import permit from NCA required before shipment

Common Questions

Air freight Nigeria β€” frequently asked questions

How long does air freight from China to Nigeria take?
Economy air freight from China (Guangzhou, Shanghai, Yiwu) to Lagos MMIA takes 5–7 working days door-to-door including MMIA customs clearance. Express service is 3–5 days. Times include PAAR processing, customs examination, duty payment and MMIA cargo terminal handling. Lagos delivery is included β€” add 1–2 days for Abuja or other states.
What is PAAR and do you handle it for air cargo?
PAAR (Pre-Arrival Assessment Report) is a mandatory Nigeria Customs filing that must be submitted before your cargo lands in Nigeria. We file PAAR for every air shipment, typically 24–48 hours before arrival at MMIA. Early PAAR filing means faster duty assessment and shorter dwell time at the cargo terminal. Our CRFFN-licensed agents (CRFFN/2023/004567) handle the full PAAR process β€” you just need to provide commercial invoice and packing list.
What are FAAN cargo terminal charges at MMIA?
FAAN (Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria) charges apply at MMIA's cargo terminals β€” NAHCO and SAHCO. These include handling fees (weight-based), storage (if cargo sits beyond 48 hours), security screening and gate-out fees. We include all FAAN charges in your estimate upfront β€” they are passed on at cost with zero markup. Storage charges are avoided by our agents being physically present at the terminal for timely collection.
Do you handle NAFDAC clearance for food and pharma by air?
Yes β€” we handle NAFDAC clearance for food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and medical devices arriving at MMIA. We coordinate NAFDAC pre-notification before your cargo departs, which dramatically speeds up inspection at the airport. For regulated drugs, we also advise on the NAFDAC import permit requirement before shipment. Most NAFDAC-cleared air cargo is released within 24–48 hours of landing when properly pre-notified.
What is the minimum weight for air cargo you handle?
We handle air freight from as low as 10 kg on standard routes. Most airlines apply a minimum chargeable weight of 45 kg β€” so shipments below this are charged at the 45 kg rate. For very small, high-value shipments (documents, samples, jewellery), DHL/FedEx express is sometimes more economical and we can advise. For regular commercial imports, we recommend consolidating to at least 100 kg for better rates.
Do I need Form M for air freight imports to Nigeria?
Form M is required for commercial imports valued above USD $1,000, regardless of whether goods come by air or sea. For air freight, Form M must be opened at your Nigerian bank before the airway bill is issued by the airline. The processing timeline is tighter for air than sea β€” we advise clients to open Form M immediately upon confirming an order. We guide you through the current CBN Form M requirements, which change periodically.
How is air freight chargeable weight calculated?
Airlines charge based on chargeable weight β€” whichever is higher between actual weight (kg on a scale) and volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is calculated as: Length Γ— Width Γ— Height (cm) Γ· 6,000. For example, a 10 kg parcel measuring 60Γ—50Γ—40 cm has volumetric weight of 20 kg β€” so you'd pay for 20 kg. Light, bulky cargo like foam, clothing or plastics is typically charged on volumetric weight. Dense, heavy cargo like machinery is charged on actual weight. We calculate this precisely before confirming your estimate.
Can you ship lithium batteries or electronics with batteries by air?
Yes β€” lithium batteries and devices containing them (phones, laptops, power banks) can be shipped by air under IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR). They require specific packaging (UN-certified), labelling, and a dangerous goods declaration. We are experienced in DGR shipments and can advise on packing requirements before your supplier ships. Standalone lithium batteries (not in devices) are more restricted β€” please contact us for specific guidance on your cargo.
Do you offer door-to-door service from origin to Lagos or Abuja?
Yes β€” our air freight service is fully door-to-door. At origin, we can arrange pickup from your supplier's factory or warehouse in China, UK, UAE, USA or Europe. In Nigeria, we clear at MMIA and deliver by our GPS-tracked, insured vehicles to Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt or any other state. You deal with one team, one WhatsApp number, one invoice. No hand-offs between agents.
What phone number should I use to reach you?
We operate two lines. UK: +447512572083 β€” for clients importing from Europe or sending goods from the UK. Nigeria: 07036234403 β€” for clients based in Nigeria. Both numbers are WhatsApp-enabled and monitored 24/7 by our operations team. Our company is registered in Nigeria (CAC RC 9161673) and licensed by CRFFN (CRFFN/2023/004567). You can also email us or use the estimate form on this page.
